OUR YEAR - 2008-2009 August --- August 18 Indoor picnic We gathered at the Horn Rapids Club House for an evening with fellow retired and active teachers. A delicious salad bar including a choice of many salads, rolls, beverages and dessert was prepared by the ladies of the Club House. Swing Unlimited played big band music during the evening. Officers were introduced. Active teachers were invited to attend. September -- September 22 Laura Jones, 2008 Teacher of the Year Laura Jones, 2008 Washington State Teacher of the Year, told us about her teaching experiences in the Pasco School System. Laura is a marketing teacher at Pasco High School. October - October 27 Legislative Candidatesâ Forum Candidates for election on November 4 from the 8th & 16th Legislative Districts were asked to respond to our legislative measures which will be presented in the 2009 legislative session. 8th Legislative District: Rep Larry Haler & Rob Welch AND Carol Moser VS Brad Klipert 16th Legislative District: Rep Bill Grant & Terry Neiley AND Rep Maureen Walsh & Dante Montoya Although not up for re-election Senator Jerome Delvin was present and responded to a few questions. November - November 24 Salvation Army toy drive / Christmas carols. David Sholin, Salvation Army Corps Officer told us of the work Salvation Army does locally, nationally and worldwide. We enjoyed a delicious turkey lunch and closed the meeting with the singing of Christmas carols led by Marsha Hoffmann and our piano player was Barbara Sowell. Membership directories were distributed to those present and others will be mailed. January - January 26. -- WSSRA State President, Gene Forrester Gene gave an overview of our legislative package and how important it will be this year to maintain what we have. It is not a time to ask for more. Membership is a priority statewide. While keeping membership numbers up, we must realize that a large number of our member do pass away each month. Also joining President Gene, was Ed Ganion, Executive Director of WSSRA. Ed went into more detail on the Legislative issues which are being presented in Olympia this session. February - February 23 -- Meet Abe Lincoln We met Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States of America Abe, (aka Keith Deaton- retired teacher from Pasco) told us many stories about his presidency, the Civil War, and his family history. Born on February 12, 1809, we celebrated his 200th Birthday with cake for dessert. March - March 23 – Kimberly Camp, CEO of the Hanford Reach Interpretive Center Kimberly will provide an overview and progress of the Center.... a new visitor and heritage center being developed to celebrate and learn about the natural and cultural history of the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River and greater Columbia Basin.
